19 Jan Day #18 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge
Our 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge is all about introducing you to some simple ways to develop a healthy relationship with your phone in 2017!
It can be difficult to find some peace and quiet in today’s world. We’re constantly bombarded by infinite dings, chimes and buzzes from WhatsApp, SMS and Facebook notifications, not to mention the unmistakable sound of the default iPhone ringtone. With Day 18’s challenge we’re offering you a chance at a bit of peace and quiet by muting all sound and vibration alerts on your devices.
Day 18 – Go mute, turn off all sound notifications
How many times a day do you have a conversation with your partner, a friend or colleague with your phone in your hand? We’re all a bit guilty of this aren’t we? We turn away from our conversations to check the screen when our phone chimes. How many of us stop to think how rude this probably feels to the person we’re chatting to? (Even if they do the same to you). You wouldn’t go over and talk to someone else in the room mid-conversation, so why do we think it’s OK to check our phones while talking? It’s this inability to remain ‘present’ with someone when faced with our phones which takes its toll on our relationships, especially those that are most important to us.
We also (this time happily) let ourselves get distracted by our phones when we’re ticking off routine tasks on our to-do lists, like finishing a tax return or even cleaning out the fridge. But this actually reduces our productivity and increases the length of time it take us to do the task we’re avoiding in the first place!
The challenge today is designed to show you how turning off your noise notifications and remaining ‘present’ can reduce the overall time spent using your phones and therefore help you get more out of your day. Give it a try!
Tomorrow we’re on Day 19. All the challenge videos are on our YouTube channel. Use the hashtag #30DayDigitalDetoxChallenge on Twitter and tell us how you’re getting on!
