06 Jan Day #5 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge
Our 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge is all about introducing you to some simple ways to develop a healthy relationship with your phone in 2017!
Welcome to Day 5 of the digital detox challenge!
We’re nearing the end of Week 1 of the challenge. How are you finding it so far? Tricky or a breeze? Let us know how you’re getting on using our hashtag #30DayDigitalDetoxChallenge on Twitter!
Day 5 – do something practical
For Day 5 we’re addressing the kind of aimless screen scrolling to fill time that many of our guests talk about on our digital detox retreats. We all know about the internet ‘black hole’ we can disappear into when we’re not using our devices for anything in particular. We go online to check an email or text and then end up jumping from one social media platform to another, surfacing after a few hours wondering where all the time has gone. Sounds familiar?
To avoid this happening today we’re asking you to choose something practical to keep your hands busy this evening. Something where you really will struggle to still juggle a phone too. So, ideally, an activity that uses both hands!
We’re big fans of colouring books on our retreats and we’ve recently rediscovered the retro charms of a tricky jigsaw too. There’s also cooking, DIY and gardening.
Give it a try and see if you find yourself getting absorbed in your activity. This is also a way of losing track of time but in a good way. Psychologists call this being in ‘flow‘ which is incredibly good for our brains. As we’ve said before our attention spans are a feature of our brain activity that are really suffering with our digital dependency. Getting absorbed in a practical activity is an excellent way to retrain our brains.
Check back tomorrow for Day 6 and subscribe to our YouTube channel, for the daily videos on the challenge. At the end of the 30 days we hope you’ll have found something that works for you to help you spend time off-screen this year.
