Take Control

Day #23 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge

Our 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge is all about introducing you to some simple ways to develop a healthy relationship with your phone in 2017!

Today’s challenge is linked to that perennial subject of smartphone overuse, sleep. Our smartphone are interrupting our sleep in a big way and we want to stop that.

Day 23 – leave your phone outside your bedroom tonight

There’s so much we know now about how smartphones interfere with our sleep. It’s all down to their blue-light emitting screens. The chemical that sets our internal body clocks (melatonin) is seriously disrupted by all that blue light. Using screens just before we go to bed (and even in the middle of the night) plays havoc with our sleep patterns resulting in very disrupted sleep and us feeling exhausted the next day.

On our digital detox retreats all our guests overwhelmingly report that they have fantastic, deep and restful sleep without the presence of their phones and other digital devices in their bedrooms. To give you a little taste of how that feels we want you to try banishing your phone from your bedroom just for tonight. We know you’re going to find it hard, over 80% of our guests say they use their smartphone as an alarm clock so it’s glued to their sides, which is why on Day 10 we suggested buying an alarm clock. But if you haven’t got round to buying an alarm clock yet you can still do the challenge, just make sure the phone is plugged in right outside your bedroom door so you can hear the alarm!

In the morning try really hard not to check your phone until you’re actually up and ready for the day. We think you’ll find, as well as being more rested, that you’ll start the day calmer and will be a lot more productive. Give it a go!

Check back tomorrow for Day 23. All the past digital detox challenge videos are in a collection on our YouTube channel. Use the hashtag #30DayDigitalDetoxChallenge on Twitter to tweet us your progress!
