Take Control

Day #22 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge

Our 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge is all about introducing you to some simple ways to develop a healthy relationship with your phone in 2017!

Welcome to week four of our digital detox challenges – you’re almost there! To kick off Monday, we’re asking you to plan your week old-school style – by using a paper diary or journal.

Day 22 – substitute your phone’s calendar for a paper diary or journal

Without a doubt, there are benefits to using your smartphone’s calendar to record your busy schedule. Wherever we are, our smartphone comes too. Thanks to reminders we can set it’s impossible to miss an appointment or friend’s birthday (or it should be!). The ability to sync calendars with work colleagues or even your other half, makes for an easy life. Yet, the availability of our calendars reinforces our ‘always on’ attitude. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend some time off grid? Our digital detox retreats offer you exactly this – the perfect antidote to our hectic world.

Today’s challenge aims to show you that sometimes the very technology which is designed to make your life easier, can sometimes over-complicate it, increasing your screen time. The benefits of old-fashioned pen and paper are sometimes underrated. Jotting down a note is far quicker than adding all the necessary elements to create a digital calendar entry and is not subject to relying on software updates or temperamental technology. If your phone lets you down, your portable calendar is also gone.

As we have mentioned during this 30-day challenge, the alerts and sounds generated by our phones have the ability to distract us from the task at hand, reducing our focus. A paper diary or journal is there when you need it and therefore becomes a much more useful tool to take into a meeting than your smartphone.

Check back tomorrow for Day 23. All the past digital detox challenge videos are in a collection on our YouTube channel. Use the hashtag #30DayDigitalDetoxChallenge on Twitter to tweet us your progress!
