Take Control

Day #21 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge

Our 30 Day Digital Detox Challenge is all about introducing you to some simple ways to develop a healthy relationship with your phone in 2017!

After the challenge of being without your phone yesterday for four hours, we think you’ll find today’s challenge slightly less demanding;

Day 21 – turn off music streaming, rediscover CDs or the radio!

One of the main reasons why we all find disconnecting from our phones so hard is that they are packed with features and functionality that make them indispensable. On our digital detox retreats two of the features guests talk about being heavily reliant on are; the inbuilt smartphone cameras and music.

There’s nothing wrong with using either of these functions of course, we love them! Taking photos with our smartphone is one of the features we enjoy using the most. But it does becomes a problem when you’re trying to step away away from some of the demands of your phone – such as work email and messages – but keep being drawn to picking it up for its photography or music functions. And when it’s in your hand of course, even if you only intend to use it for a camera or listen to music, it’s very difficult to ignore any emails or messages that might arrive…

So today we want you to experiment with taking away one of those functions, your music streaming or playlists. Turn off (or temporarily deinstall) music streaming on your smartphone and rediscover enjoying music from another source. If you have a collection of CDs, dig them out and reacquaint yourself with them. We love a bit of vinyl too if you’re going really retro. Failing that, there’s always the radio! It may just remind you that you don’t always need your phone on you to enjoy some music.

Check back tomorrow for Day 22. All the past digital detox challenge videos are in a collection on our YouTube channel. Use the hashtag #30DayDigitalDetoxChallenge on Twitter to tweet us your progress!
